Adoptions from India
The Central Adoption Resource Agency (CARA) in India allows inter-country adoption only after it has been determined that the child cannot be placed within the country. CARA maintains lists of adoption agencies and is responsible for monitoring adoptions in India.
An Indian family living abroad is considered Indian and is entitled to the same preferential treatment, provided they meet the procedural requirements outlined below.
Required Documentation:
Foreign adoptive parents must provide the following:
1. Home Study Report of the foreign adoptive parents
2. Recent photographs of the adoptive family
3. Marriage certificate
4. Doctor’s statement regarding their health
5. Evidence of financial status along with supporting documents
6. Letter from Employer
7. Income Tax Statement
8. Undertaking from the child welfare agency stating that the child would be legally adopted in accordance with U.S. laws within a period not exceeding two years from the time of arrival of the child in the U.S.
